Gaijin

Gaijin

Gaijin (translating to foreigner/alien in English) focuses on analyzing Japanese fashion trends that have migrated to North America. Capturing 8 trends, from the specificity of certain garments/accessories to the broad themes of aesthetic movements, all well known and already incorporated into Japanese fashion. I found interest in this topic while watching different creators on social media find their own style through both Japanese influences and designers. Though my interest was sparked by creatives that inspire me, this topic reaches a much greater, and varying, demographic. An important factor to consider when analyzing these trends is understanding and recognizing the historic and cultural importance established in Japan. Without a healthy respect for the culture, following these trends quickly lead to appropriating the culture. This project became something a lot bigger than I had ever anticipated. From sourcing models and clothing to editing text and countless photographs, and to finally put everything together into one cohesive work. The ability to be able to work with such a great team, along with the help from my Professor, Beatriz really helped me pull through on completing this project, and for that I am grateful.

Closing Statement

Over the past four years, being able to expand my knowledge and comfort zone to create work that I normally wouldn’t express interest in, has been a very important goal, especially going into this creative field. This capstone epitomized that journey as I dived into many different jobs as a part of it, all being equally challenging, but truly offering only a glimpse into how difficult each job would be to take on fully. The program has given me the ability to recognize how important it is to have an understanding of each aspect of the industry, and the process of bringing this work together couldn’t have been a more fitting conclusion. With that being said, although the idea of actually putting oneself in the industry is daunting, I am excited to see where my classmates and I go.
