Like Water

Natalie Gregor

The collection explores the experience of doing feminine presentation that is not presented as innate, but a conspicuous creation. It is inspired by water that ripples and distorts the things behind it through refraction, similarly producing a new interpretation of the body through the garments. Claiming agency in the role of creating gender through dramatic gloss and bubbles is cathartic; after all, “in saying that we “do” gender, we are saying that gender is not only something that is done to us” (Kimmel & Holler, 2016). By highlighting one version of hyper-femininity, Like Water aims to express the variability and possibility of gender as we know it and what it means to be active participants within it.

A Fortune Cat is a lucky talisman in Chinese culture, and many other Asian countries as well. It is to bring good luck and fortune for its owners. The colour of the cat symbolizes different meanings; a calico cat is considered to be the luckiest amongst them all. Made with resin and paint.

Closing Statement

The years I’ve spent studying fashion have been formative to my technical development as well as to my design practice and confidence to explore/express ideas through researched construction and conceptual work. As a designer I’m eager to keep creating while continuing to push my research and development skills.
