Threaded Identities

Threaded Identities

I have chosen to pursue my interest of art, culture, and identity through a hands-on approach of making where I can see my own identity reflected in what I create. My project centers on Third Space Theory, which is a theory that explores the creation of new hybrid spaces that culminate from the intermingling of existing spaces (Kettle, 2019). I chose to explore the motifs of my own cultural practice of Gara embroidery, blended with the technique of punch-needle rug hooking to create my own interpretation of soft goods. I took a practice-based approach in the way that Candy (2006) describes, because this content does not currently exist and thus this approach allows me to research, make and reflect to contribute to our shared knowledge as a society.

Closing Statement

This program has challenged me and helped me grow more than I thought possible. One key takeaway, is that the learning will never stop. I have found my passions within this program by trying out different and new things, rather than just sticking with what I know. It is a program that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and encouraged my to be purposeful and thoughtful with all that I create.
